Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade 2026: A Local's Guide to the Best Spots, Parking and Cruises

If you live in Orange County, the Christmas Boat Parade is just what you do in December. Every year alot of us end up on the same sidewalks on Balboa Island with a hot chocolate, watching a hundred boats covered in lights go by and arguing about which one should win.
This year is the 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, and it runs Wednesday, December 16 through Sunday, December 20, 2026. It's free, it's one of the oldest holiday traditions on the West Coast, and if you plan it right it's one of the best nights of the year. Here's everything we'd tell a friend coming in from out of town.
Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade 2026: The Essentials
Dates: Wednesday, Dec. 16 to Sunday, Dec. 20, 2026 (five nights)
Time: starts around 6:30 p.m. and runs until about 9:00 p.m. each night
Route: about 14 miles around Newport Harbor, starting and ending at the tip of Lido Isle
Boats: roughly 100 decorated yachts, sailboats, kayaks and canoes
Cost: free to watch from shore
Opening night: fireworks off the Newport Pier around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16 (weather and safety permitting). Actor and Newport native Ted McGinley is the opening-night Grand Marshal.
Official site: christmasboatparade.com, where the route map with times at each point is posted closer to the date
One thing first-timers don't realize: the parade is a long loop, and the front and back of it are about two and a half hours apart. Pick one spot and let the boats come to you. Trying to chase it by car is a mistake, trust me.
Best Places to Watch the Boat Parade
Balboa Island
Our favorite. The channel is narrow, so the boats pass close and you can actually hear the music. Walk the boardwalk along the bayfront, grab a Balboa Bar or a frozen banana on Marine Avenue, and post up. It gets packed, so get there early and don't plan on driving onto the island once things get going.
Marina Park
Marina Park (1600 W. Balboa Blvd.) is the biggest public viewing spot on the route at 10.5 acres. It's free, and it's the first public stop, with the boats coming by around 6:45 p.m. There's a playground and room to spread out, so this is the one we send families with little kids to. There are only 177 parking spaces though, so they go fast.
Balboa Village and the Fun Zone
Great for first-timers. You've got the Ferris wheel, food, and the harbor right there. Peninsula Park nearby also has a drone show most nights (planned for around 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. this year), so you get two shows in one.
Reserved seats
If you want a guaranteed seat, Newport Sea Base (1931 W. Coast Hwy.) sells waterfront seating. Seating opens at 7:00 p.m., the parade reaches it around 8:37 p.m., and parking is $25. The American Legion Post on 15th Street also usually does viewing parties on its patio.

Watching From the Water
Honestly this is the best way to see it. You're right there with the parade boats, it's warm in the cabin, and you never fight for a spot.
Parade cruises: Newport Landing runs three cruises a night during the parade (about 80 minutes each). On parade nights the boats go out as private charters, from roughly $1,600 for a midweek 47-passenger boat up to $8,600 for the biggest boat on a weekend. They sell out early, so book now if you have a group.
Holiday Lights cruises (non-parade nights): 75-minute public cruises from Nov. 27 through New Year's, about $36 for adults. You see the Ring of Lights waterfront homes without the parade crowds.
Your own boat or a rental: spectator boats line up outside the route. Get in position before 6:30, go slow, and watch your wake around anchored boats.

Parking and Getting Around
Arrive before 5 p.m. Park once and walk. By 6:30 the roads around Marina Park, the peninsula and the Fun Zone are pretty much gridlocked.
Rideshare is your friend, but have them drop you a few blocks away from the water and walk in.
Weeknights are easier. Wednesday has the fireworks, but Thursday and Friday crowds are usually lighter than the weekend.
Dress warmer than you think. It's Southern California, but it's noticeably colder on the water after dark. Bring a jacket and a blanket if you're sitting.
Where to Stay
Balboa Bay Resort: right on the harbor, and it hosts one of the drone shows (planned around 6:00 and 8:15 p.m.). A room with a bay view is about as good as it gets for parade week.
Lido House: in Lido Village, walking distance to the water, shops and restaurants. Easy to park once and forget the car.
Balboa Island and peninsula rentals: if you're bringing family, a rental on the island puts you right on the route. Book early, December weekends go quick.

Where to Eat and What Else to Do That Week
Book dinner with a view. The official site lists "Dine & Watch" restaurants near the viewing spots. The waterfront spots in Lido Marina Village and Balboa Village fill up first, especially opening and closing night.
Ride the Balboa Island Ferry. The little three-car ferry between the island and the peninsula has been running for over a century. It's a five-minute ride, and at night with the lights it's a must.
See the Ring of Lights. Waterfront homes compete for the best decorations, and they stay lit all season. A walk around Balboa Island or a Holiday Lights cruise on a quieter night is the way to see them.
Fashion Island at Christmas. The giant tree and the outdoor shopping make an easy afternoon before the parade.
Crystal Cove and Corona del Mar. If you've got a free morning, walk the beach at Crystal Cove or grab breakfast in CdM before heading back to the harbor.

Flying In for the Boat Parade
Alot of people come in for parade week to see family, and it's an easy one to do private. John Wayne Airport (SNA) is only about 15–20 minutes from the harbor and has full-service private terminals. Long Beach (LGB) is a good backup, about 35–45 minutes away depending on traffic.
SNA has a strict nighttime noise curfew, so plan to land well before late evening and depart in the morning.
From Las Vegas, the Bay Area or Phoenix, a turboprop or light jet is perfect. Figure about $6,000–$8,000 per flight hour for a King Air or PC-12 and $6,000–$7,000 for a light jet. See our light jet charter and turboprop pages.
Coming from the East Coast with family, a midsize or super midsize jet ($7,000–$9,000 per hour) makes the trip nonstop. More on midsize jets.
Parade week runs right into Christmas travel, one of the busiest stretches of the year, so book the jet when you book the hotel.
