If you're flying private to New York City, Teterboro is almost always the answer. It's 12 miles from Midtown, it's built for business jets, and the FBOs there have it down to a science. We book alot of Teterboro private jet charter trips, and the one thing that trips people up is that TEB has rules you won't find at most airports.

Teterboro (TEB) Quick Facts

  • Location: Bergen County, New Jersey, about 12 miles north-northwest of Midtown Manhattan.

  • Runways: 7,000 feet and 6,013 feet.

  • Weight limit: no aircraft over 100,000 pounds. That's been the rule since 1977 and it's why you'll never see an airliner there.

  • No airlines: it's basically all private and business aviation, which keeps it fast.

The 100,000 Pound Rule (and Why It Matters)

Most private jets are well under the limit, so for 95% of trips it doesn't come up. Where it matters is the very biggest ultra long range jets. A Global 7500 or a BBJ can weigh more than 100,000 pounds fully fueled, so for a nonstop to Europe or Asia the operator may have to plan around it, sometimes by departing from Westchester or Newark instead. If you're booking one of those, we check this before anything gets signed.

FBOs at Teterboro

Teterboro has some of the best FBOs in the country, including Signature, Atlantic, Meridian and Jet Aviation. Cars pull right up to the airplane at most of them, which is half the reason people love TEB. Just like anywhere else, the operator usually chooses the FBO, but tell us if you have a favorite.

Teterboro vs Westchester vs the Other New York Airports

  • Teterboro (TEB): closest to Manhattan, the default for most trips.

  • Westchester / White Plains (HPN): great for Greenwich, Westchester and the Connecticut crowd, and an option for some of the heavier jets.

  • Morristown (MMU): a quieter New Jersey option when TEB is slammed.

  • Republic (FRG) and Islip (ISP): handy for Long Island.

  • East Hampton (HTO): the summer move for the Hamptons, ask us about seasonal rules before booking.

Getting Into Manhattan

By car, figure 20 to 45 minutes to Midtown depending on the tunnel and time of day. If time really matters, a helicopter from TEB to one of the Manhattan heliports takes about 10 minutes and we can set that up as part of the trip.

What It Costs to Fly Private to New York

From Los Angeles it's about four and a half to five hours, which is super midsize or heavy jet territory at about $7,000 to $11,000 an hour. From Florida it's two and a half to three hours, so a midsize works great. If you fly New York often, read our take on jet cards before you sign up for one, and keep an eye on empty legs, TEB has tons of them going back to Florida and the West Coast.

Things to Do in New York

You know the hits: Broadway, the Met, Central Park, Hudson Yards. For dinner, Carbone and Le Bernardin are still the tough reservations, and the rooftop scene in summer is hard to beat. In summer, alot of our clients just use TEB as a stop on the way to the Hamptons, and in the fall the US Open and New York Fashion Week keep the ramp busy.
